Final blog

Finished off bottom part of report. Wrote a discussion and conclusion that was related to the aim and hypothesis. I also completed the graph which allowed me to see how much certain substances increased the melting rate and decreased it. This is my final blog and gained a lot of knowledge from these results. The problem was solved as salt is what makes ice melt the fastest but also my prediction in my hypothesis was right that it was salt. I learnt how these substances react when coated onto ice cube and how they changed throughout the experiment.

Ice + salt

The first ice cube was coated with salt. From further background research I found out that salt makes ice cooler. Although this may be the case, this ice cube was the first to melt with a time of 32minutes and 17 seconds. The salt quickly turned into a pasty type formulary once it made contact with the ice cube. By the end of the experiment the salt was completely liquid as it absorbed all the water out of the ice cube.  Salt first put on to ice cube Completely melted

Ice + sugar

The next ice cube to be tested is the one with sugar. To my surprise sugar was the last ice cube to melt with a time of 49 minutes and 32 seconds. I did further research on why the sugar took the longest to melt and found out that when sugar is added the molecules dissolve into the water therefore there are less water molecules because the sugar replaces it. Similar to the salt the sugar formed into a paste with a dull white colour. Unlike the salt the sugar continued to stay in a sort of paste form however it was not far away from becoming completely liquid.
